Update on U.S.-Iran Relations
Update: 10:58am: President Donald Trump, reversing earlier statements, announced that discussions with Iran are ongoing and that he has decided to cancel a planned attack on the country.
Trump shared on Truth Social, “Due to high-level consultations with Iranian leadership, I have called off the attacks and bombings initially set for tonight against Iran.”
He continued, “Both the United States and other nations—including Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt—have approved the discussions and their details.”
Moreover, the President confirmed that the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports will persist until an agreement is reached.
“The naval blockade will be in effect until this deal is finalized. We will announce the timing and location for the signing shortly,” he stated.
Earlier in the day, Trump remarked that U.S. military action would “hit very hard” on Iran as tensions rose following Iran’s downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter earlier this week.
Retaliatory Actions
7:25am: President Trump declared that the U.S. would launch a major attack on Iran amidst escalating conflicts in the region.
This renewed tension followed Iran’s action against a U.S. helicopter, though the crew was rescued, as confirmed by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). This led to retaliatory strikes against Iran by the U.S. military.
CENTCOM had conducted further attacks on Iran, targeting “military surveillance, communication systems, and air defense locations,” which they described as a response to “Iran’s unwarranted aggression.”
CENTCOM stated via Twitter, “At 5:15 p.m. ET today, additional self-defense strikes were launched against multiple Iranian targets as directed by the commander-in-chief. These airstrikes respond to Iran’s continued aggression.”
Iran retaliated, reportedly targeting neighboring countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan.
Trump’s statements today seem to escalate the previous days’ hostilities.
“Tonight, the United States will strike hard at Iran. Most of their defenses have already been weakened!” he posted on Truth Social.
He also mentioned plans for future operations aimed at Iran’s oil facilities, suggesting that the U.S. would eventually take control of these assets.
“In the near future, we will occupy Cargu Island and other oil infrastructure sites and gain full control of the oil and gas markets, just as it has worked out for Venezuela,” he added.
Kuwait’s military reported today that 24 drones had flown into its airspace in the past two days. Fortunately, there were minimal damages reported and no fatalities.
The military indicated that over 1,200 Iranian air attack weapons have been deployed in their airspace since conflicts escalated.
Bahrain’s Armed Forces condemned Iran’s attacks on their territory, affirming that their air defense systems intercepted several hostile assets.
