Rubio and Dana White finalize agreement to introduce 'UFC Diplomacy' to the State Department before the Freedom 250 event at the White House

UFC and State Department Join Forces for Sports Diplomacy

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and UFC President Dana White have formalized a new partnership via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at the State Department recently.

This collaboration integrates the Ultimate Fighting Championship, recognized as a leading organization in mixed martial arts, into the State Department’s ongoing sports diplomacy efforts, which already embrace sports like soccer, tennis, and American football.

According to the new agreement, UFC athletes and coaches will act as U.S. sports ambassadors. They are set to travel around the globe conducting training sessions, providing health and nutrition advice, and fostering leadership among youth in various countries.

The idea is to leverage the UFC’s vast international appeal as a diplomatic strategy, aiming to create connections with different cultures. This initiative sees combat sports as a common ground, with operations managed through the State Department’s cultural exchange bureau.

During the signing ceremony, Rubio characterized this initiative as a prime example of American soft power, emphasizing the sport’s potential to foster cultural unity. White added that combat sports cross cultural and linguistic barriers—an inherent aspect of humanity.

This initiative falls under the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, paralleling a previous agreement made earlier this year with the NFL aimed at international growth.

The signing comes just ahead of a much-anticipated UFC event scheduled for the White House South Lawn on Sunday, coinciding with President Trump’s birthday. Titled “UFC Freedom 250,” the event aims to kick off the country’s 250th independence anniversary and promises to feature a large Octagon for the occasion.

While there have been legal objections claiming the event misuses federal property, Rubio has humorously dismissed them, noting that the high demand for the 4,000 temporary seats has inadvertently created a “diplomatic crisis” due to the surge of requests from various foreign dignitaries and leaders seeking invitations.
