Tim Allen Reflects on Fatherhood and Sobriety
Tim Allen is opening up about his initial feelings toward fatherhood, sharing some regrets and discussing how his three decades of sobriety have influenced his perspective. In a candid interview with a weekly magazine, he revealed that he “didn’t really want” to become a father and views his journey in parenting as continuously evolving.
“Honestly, I didn’t really want to be a dad. I make jokes about it on stage, but, you know, kids weren’t really my thing,” he admitted. Parenting, he believes, is a complex process filled with ups and downs, much like getting a driver’s license or a passport—it’s just part of life.
Allen is a father to two daughters: Katherine, from his first marriage to Laura Daybell, and Elizabeth, with his current wife, Jane Haiduk.
Interestingly, during the interview, Allen mentioned that Jane wanted to have five kids, but it seems that was more of a dream than a plan.
“I didn’t really want to be a father. I joke about it on stage, but I wasn’t a real fan of kids,” he commented.
He reflected on how his busy career affected his relationship with Katherine, indicating that her mother did most of the parenting while he was away. Growing up in a large family, he expressed that raising daughters gave him a different outlook on strength and resilience in women.
“Honestly, I’ve never been that interested in things like girls’ clothes or gossip. What I focus on is teaching them about money and self-reliance, which applies to everyone,” he noted.
He also discussed the unique bond he shares with his daughters, mentioning how their communication often transcends typical parent-child exchanges. “You know, sometimes she’ll remind me of something I said, and I realize she actually listens to me,” he shared, reflecting on their relationship’s depth.
Allen has been open about his journey with sobriety. In previous interviews, he discussed how he wasn’t sober during part of Katherine’s upbringing, which weighs on him. “I made amends with her. Having been sober for around 30 years compared to my younger child, it’s just a different experience altogether,” he said. He often finds himself thinking about how different his relationship was with Katherine compared to Elizabeth.
As the release date for Toy Story 5 approaches, Allen reminiscences about his past. He candidly shared how, after finishing college, he got involved in crime, leading to a two-year prison sentence. “My mindset just wasn’t right. If I could go back, I would change everything. I didn’t want to live like that again,” he reflected.
Books started to change his outlook during his time in prison, as he began to visualize a different path for himself. “I realized I had made mistakes that had humiliated my family and friends, and I was determined not to go down that road ever again,” he added.
