Tim Allen Reflects on Fatherhood and Sobriety
Tim Allen is candidly sharing his early feelings about fatherhood, the regrets he’s harbored, and the impact of his three decades of sobriety.
In a recent conversation with a magazine, he admitted that he “didn’t really want” to become a dad, describing his path to parenting as “a work in progress.” He joked about not being particularly fond of kids, adding, “There’s nothing special about getting a driver’s license or passport,” but he recognizes that becoming a parent is an evolving journey.
Allen has two daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth. Katherine is from his first marriage to Laura Daybell, while Elizabeth is with his current wife, Jane Haiduk.
In the interview, Allen mentioned that Jane had aspirations for a larger family, wanting five kids in total because, as he humorously noted, “the first two would tell.” He reflected on how, during Katherine’s upbringing, he was often away, leaving her mother to handle most childcare duties. He comes from a large family with seven boys and two girls, but raising daughters has given him a very different viewpoint on what it means to empower women.
Interestingly, he stated, “I have little interest in girls’ clothes, their looks, or gossip.” Instead, he emphasized teaching his daughters about financial independence and self-care—values he believes are crucial for both girls and boys.
As time passed, Allen observed a unique strength in the bond between fathers and daughters. He shared, “We communicate on a different level,” admitting he didn’t realize how profoundly he could connect with someone younger. “Sometimes she says, ‘That’s what you always said,’ and I think, ‘Wow, you’ve really listened,'” he reflected.
Allen has been open about his sobriety journey. He noted that he wasn’t sober throughout much of Katherine’s early life. “I made amends with her,” he revealed, adding that there’s a marked difference in his parenting style with his younger children after nearly 30 years of sobriety. “She didn’t know that version of me. I thought about it often and spoke with Kate, but she’s been very understanding,” he explained.
As the release of Toy Story 5 approaches, set for June 19, Allen reminisced about some early missteps. He recounted how, after college, he lost his way and turned to crime, resulting in two years in prison.
“I started reading books while I was incarcerated,” he shared, stating he discovered stories of successful individuals. “I began to focus on where I wanted to go in life,” the actor continued. He reflected, “I never wanted to make that mistake again. I embarrassed my family, my friends, and myself. It was a lesson I wouldn’t forget.”
