Controversy Erupts at North Carolina Graduation
A valedictorian from Hoggard High School in North Carolina expressed feeling “heartbroken” after facing backlash during his graduation speech. Kyler Hosek, the student in question, was confronted by fellow senior Sarah Rudeshir, who called attention to a phrase that appeared to echo comments made by Kanye West—now known as Ye—during a 2022 discussion with Alex Jones.
In a statement, Hosek expressed regret that his choice of words overshadowed the message he intended to deliver, adding, “I strongly condemn anti-Semitism. Those beliefs do not reflect my values,” as he spoke to WECT.
During his speech, Hosek addressed the potential for graduates in the realm of artificial intelligence. However, it was his closing remark that stirred up the most controversy. He quoted, “Every human being has something of value that they bring to the table,” a phrase that sparked discontent since Ye had used it previously, linking it to a defense of Hitler.
Rudeshir noticed the similarities and openly criticized Hosek while taking the microphone. “Kyler forgot to end the quote,” she remarked, showcasing her anger about the situation. After repeating the full phrase, she was removed from the stage by the principal.
Students in attendance expressed their disapproval of Hosek’s speech and pointed fingers at school administrators. One student shared, “I don’t think it’s right for a valedictorian to say something like that, especially at a public school that should have checks in place.” Another student echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the problematic nature of the omitted part of the quote, which glorified a totalitarian figure.
Despite the uproar, school officials claimed they reviewed Hosek’s speech thoroughly prior to the event. Superintendent Dr. Christopher Burns stated, “While the district did not identify any connections during the review process, we understand that some community members have a different interpretation.”
School authorities reiterated their stance against any forms of hate, discrimination, or harmful ideologies associated with public figures.
