Elon Musk on Track to Become the World’s First Trillionaire
Elon Musk, already the richest individual globally, is set to become the first trillionaire, thanks to a surge in shares from his space exploration company.
This forecast emerged early Friday as SpaceX executives rang the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange.
Musk, noted for his innovative technology, is approaching the trillion-dollar milestone following the largest initial public offering (IPO) ever, as enthusiastic investors make significant investments in the aerospace leader.
“The second richest person has been around $300 billion, so that’s less than a third of what Musk could potentially be worth tomorrow. Only one other person, [Oracle founder] Larry Ellison, has ever touched $400 billion,” explained Matt Durot, deputy editor at Forbes Wealth.
Prior to SpaceX shares going public on Nasdaq, Forbes estimated Musk’s net worth at $982.6 billion.
A significant portion of his wealth is linked to SpaceX, where his personal stake is valued at approximately $866 billion. Based on company filings, Reuters calculated that Musk’s net worth would surpass $1.1 trillion once trading commenced Friday, when combined with Tesla and his other assets.
“Elon is the Edison of our time,” remarked Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase.
Musk gained international attention initially through Tesla and SpaceX but expanded his influence further with the $44 billion purchase of X (previously Twitter) in 2022. He also teamed up with Sam Altman, creator of ChatGPT, to launch OpenAI before starting xAI and its AI engine, Grok.
SpaceX and Tesla remain central to Musk’s technology empire. SpaceX’s IPO broke records, raising an impressive $75 billion, showcasing the excitement from investors about Musk’s projects. Before the share offering, Forbes had Musk’s net worth at $780 billion, well above Alphabet co-founder Larry Page, the next billionaire in line.
Despite ongoing concerns about wealth disparity and shifting public sentiment towards the ultra-wealthy, Musk continues to enjoy strong support from his followers—many of whom seem unfazed by his rapidly growing wealth.
