Zac Brown Defends National Anthem Performance at UFC Freedom 250
Country artist Zac Brown has shared his thoughts on performing the national anthem at the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 event, taking place at the White House in Washington, D.C.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Brown expressed that his performance is rooted in a deep sense of patriotism and respect for the military. He highlighted that around 8,000 active-duty military members are expected to attend the event on Sunday.
“Hey, I’m here for the military,” he said, emphasizing, “I’m here to honor America.”
He addressed the political backlash surrounding his decision, asserting that his intent is not political but purely patriotic.
“For me, this is patriotism, not politics. I mean, division is bullshit. I don’t believe in that. I love this country and the people who sacrificed so that I could achieve the American dream.” He went on to encourage hard work and good choices for everyone, highlighting the opportunities available in America.
Brown, an avid UFC fan, stated that it is his favorite sport. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the event.
“I’m honored to have you, Danna,” he mentioned, referring to UFC President Dana White, and acknowledged this chance as something special.
The “Chicken Fried” singer is set to perform at the ceremonial weigh-in on Saturday at Ellipse Park, just near the White House. He will then sing the national anthem during a best-of-seven series on Sunday, accompanied by the Marine Band.
Brown also indicated the significance of this MMA event, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of American Independence Day.
“I’m really looking forward to this weekend. This is history. You get to be a part of American history,” he said, noting it’s the first sporting event to take place on the White House lawn. “So it’s an honor.”
The South Lawn is set to feature a large red, white, and blue structure called the Claw, which will arch over the Octagon.
This week, UFC unveiled the patriotic costumes for the Octagon Girls, who will be participating in various events like the weigh-in and the historical fight card on Sunday.
The UFC Freedom 250 event not only celebrates American independence but also coincides with Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
