NBA Finals Update: Knicks Take Control

The San Antonio Spurs were on the brink of shifting momentum in the NBA Finals when it all slipped away. In Game 4 on Wednesday, the New York Knicks pulled off a stunning comeback after trailing by 29 points in the second half and 20 points in the fourth quarter. They eventually took a 3-1 series lead, marking the largest comeback in NBA Finals history.

The Spurs struggled early in the series, losing their first two home games before managing to win Game 3 despite being seven points down. However, the energy and momentum they had from that victory vanished in Game 4.

On Friday, Victor Wembanyama wasn’t discussing how to turn the series around, but rather if “the group actually thinks” they can win three straight games for the championship. It’s a fair question, considering the circumstances.

His response was confident, “Yes, absolutely. Everyone thinks—everyone knows—we’re going to do it.”

Meanwhile, the Knicks’ comeback has drawn comparisons to the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers, who also overcame a three-game deficit to win the Finals against the Golden State Warriors, despite their record-breaking season.

Certainly, the Spurs were left in disbelief after the game at Madison Square Garden. But Wembanyama is ready to move on. “You can’t say it was that hard to shake off, right? It’s over. We don’t have time to regret too long,” he noted, emphasizing the urgency of the playoffs.

Looking ahead, Game 5 is set for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET in San Antonio. If the Spurs manage to win, they’ll head back to New York for Game 6 on Tuesday, coinciding with a World Cup match featuring Wembanyama’s native France against Senegal at nearby MetLife Stadium.
