Knicks’ Game 3 Loss Sparks Debate on Refereeing
Following the New York Knicks’ defeat in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, coach Mike Brown voiced concerns about the officiating. He pointed out that the Spurs outscored the Knicks 14-3 in free throws during the third quarter. “I spoke to the officials, and they acknowledged certain fouls. Sure, we might have committed some, but so did they,” Brown explained to reporters after the Spurs took a 2-1 series lead.
Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns, a key player for the Knicks, seemed to take a different approach before Game 4. He responded to Brown’s remarks by emphasizing that the loss was primarily about their own performance. “The refs didn’t cost us the game,” Towns stated. “We turned the ball over and failed to execute what we had done to win 13 straight games. That’s how you end up losing. We strayed from our game plan.” His frustration was clear; turnovers were a significant factor in their playoff performance.
The stats seem to back up Brown’s points as the Spurs had three times as many free throw attempts in the second half of their 115-111 victory. Still, Towns argued that the Knicks’ execution was ultimately the main issue.
Looking ahead, the Knicks are eager to find redemption in Game 4. They were mostly spared from foul trouble in the fourth quarter but managed only 36% shooting from the field in the second half, which clearly needs improvement.
With the teams set to meet again at Madison Square Garden, it’s uncertain how much the referees will influence the game. Nevertheless, Brown suggested that the upcoming contest would be crucial for his team. “We have to focus on what we can control,” he noted. “We gave up leads at the start of both halves, and that’s something we can fix.”
Towns had a quieter night in Game 3, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds, a drop from his team-leading 21 points in the previous game. Jalen Brunson shone brightly with 32 points on Monday.
Game 4 is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. ET, with Game 5 returning the series to San Antonio on Saturday.
