Trump’s Name Removed from Kennedy Center After Legal Dispute

In a recent development, the Department of Justice has confirmed that President Donald Trump’s name has officially been taken off the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. This decision follows a contentious legal struggle that reached its climax just in time.

The removal came after a compliance notice was filed in federal court, indicating that the administration had run out of avenues for appeal. In a last-ditch effort, government lawyers argued that renaming the venue could lead to widespread public confusion and complicate fundraising efforts.

“No one else other than President Trump would be in the position of both rebuilding the Building and raising the money for its operation,” the filing cautioned, suggesting that the center might face potential financial issues without his name.

U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper had previously ruled that renaming the venue required congressional approval, establishing a deadline for the removal of the name. This deadline was set for Friday night.

As the clock ticked down, the administration sought a 12-hour extension, citing delays caused by severe thunderstorms. Although this extension was not granted, workers started to dismantle the letters spelling out Trump’s name early Saturday morning.

The work took place behind a large tarp on scaffolding and was completed just a few hours beyond the initially mandated deadline.

This event marks a notable moment in the history of the national cultural center, which was created by Congress in 1964 as a living tribute to President John F. Kennedy. After returning to the presidency, Trump quickly restructured the center’s board and, by December 2025, they voted unanimously to add his name to the front of the building.

Despite this legal setback, it appears that Trump is continuing with plans to influence the architecture of the nation’s capital.
