Adoption Agency Revises Policy on LGBTQ Couples
A prominent Christian adoption agency in the U.S. has updated its policy, stating that LGBTQ couples will no longer be allowed to adopt children through its program, citing a renewed commitment to its religious principles.
On Wednesday, Bethany Christian Services issued a press release outlining this change, which requires prospective foster families to align with the organization’s statement of faith.
“Defining our Christian identity is essential to our Christian witness and critical to the long-term health, sustainability, and impact of our mission,” said Keith Cureton, the CEO of Bethany Christian Services, in a statement.
He further explained, “We believe this clarity will strengthen our service, respect the people we serve, and enhance cooperation with partners who share our faith.”
Founded in 1944 and based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bethany Christian Services operates in over 25 states in the U.S. Its mission centers on helping children and families thrive.
A spokesperson for the agency reiterated that this initiative is meant to reinforce the Christian foundation guiding the organization for more than eight decades. They emphasized that maintaining fidelity to religious teachings is essential to fulfilling their mission of demonstrating love and mercy through community service.
Starting in June 2027, the agency will only license and relicense foster families whose beliefs coincide with their Statement of Faith. They plan to communicate directly with families about what this means and how the transition will work for those who do not align with this declaration.
The agency noted, “We support families through a thoughtful transition process if they don’t subscribe to our Christian mission.”
The “God’s Plan for Marriage” section of their statement indicates a belief that God intended family as a structure for love and growth, asserting that marriage is a covenant between one man and one woman, fundamentally reflecting God’s love and faithfulness. They believe this setup creates a nurturing environment for families.
Despite this policy update, Bethany Christian Services affirmed that it will continue to support all children and families in need, regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds, driven by its commitment to Christian faith.
