Israel Targets Hezbollah Commander Linked to US Soldier Deaths
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has reported the elimination of a Hezbollah official thought to be behind the kidnapping and killing of five American soldiers in 2007.
IDF confirmed that Ali Moussa Dakdouk, a prominent Hezbollah figure, was killed in a precise operation near the Litani River in southern Lebanon on Friday.
“Target eliminated: Ali Musa Dakduk, a senior commander in Hezbollah who has held various key positions within the organization,” stated the IDF, emphasizing that Dakduk played a critical role in planning terrorist attacks against Israel and Israeli soldiers. In 2007, he was responsible for orchestrating the abduction and murder of the five US servicemen.
The Israeli forces specifically aimed at a seasoned Hezbollah operative with a history of senior roles within the group.
“His death is a notable setback for Hezbollah’s hierarchy, taking out one of its most significant figures involved in attacks against Israeli citizens, IDF personnel, and American forces,” the IDF explained in a public statement.
The IDF reiterated its commitment to continuing operations against senior Hezbollah commanders.
According to the IDF, Dakdouk had several key roles, including leading security for ex-Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, oversight of Radwan’s forces, and running operations for Nasser’s forces, among others. He also commanded the Hezbollah Golan Terrorist Network, which was essential for expanding Hezbollah’s military presence in Syria and establishing infrastructure near the Israeli frontier. The activities of this network were uncovered by Israel in 2019.
“In recent years, he has significantly influenced movements and attacks against Israel and its military,” the IDF noted.
Following his capture by US forces in Iraq in 2007, Dakdouk was transferred to Iraqi custody during the American withdrawal in 2011. Eventually, an Iraqi court dismissed the charges against him, and he was released in 2012.
The IDF declared that Dakduk’s death marks yet another substantial blow to Hezbollah’s leadership, particularly in the context of its activities against Israeli and American targets.
This announcement coincided with Israel conducting airstrikes in Beirut’s Dahieh district, which reportedly targeted Hezbollah infrastructure in response to previous shelling by Hezbollah into Israeli territory. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz made a joint statement stressing that Israel would not tolerate attacks against its land.
The situation appears particularly delicate, with ongoing US-backed initiatives aiming to foster diplomatic agreements in the region involving Iran.
A diplomat mentioned to Fox News that the recent airstrike complicates negotiations, labeling it a possible sabotage of American efforts to establish peace in the region. However, a senior Israeli official pushed back against this claim, insisting that Israel was merely responding to direct threats from Hezbollah.
