Bear Attack in California
California was recently reminded of its state flag’s symbolism after a bear attacked a couple outside their home, resulting in significant injuries. They defended themselves using a machete and a water bottle.
The incident took place in Mammoth Lakes, nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 420 miles east of San Francisco. Authorities said that a female resident, prompted by one of her dogs barking around 6 a.m., went outside to see what was happening.
When she stepped out, she discovered one of her dogs in a confrontation with a 70-pound black bear, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Other dogs in the yard also joined the fray, escalating the situation further.
Things took a turn for the worse when the woman decided to intervene. “She was yelling and trying to separate the animals, but the bear redirected its attention and attacked her,” explained Corey Collins, chief of law enforcement at CDFW.
Meanwhile, her husband was alerted by the noise and rushed outside to help, only to be assaulted by the bear as well.
In a surprising move, his wife seized the moment to grab a water bottle and try to scare the bear away from him. The man then dashed inside to fetch a weapon.
He returned, brandishing an axe. “This was how he fought off the bear,” Collins noted, adding that they both managed to escape afterward.
The husband was reportedly injured quite badly, and CDFW later deemed the bear—a 17-month-old—posed a threat to public safety, leading to its euthanization.
Officials confirmed that the couple was hospitalized, suffering from bites and claw marks.
Despite its relatively small size, a young bear can still cause considerable harm. “A 70-pound bear can inflict serious damage,” Collins stated. “Wild animals are incredibly strong, and the outcome could have been much worse.”
Mammoth Lakes Police Chief Dan Kasabians remarked that such incidents are exceedingly rare in the area. “Bears typically shy away from humans. This aggressive behavior is not something we see often,” he commented.
Mammoth Lakes, known for its recreational activities like fishing, hiking, and skiing, attracts over 3 million visitors annually.
The bear featured on the California state flag is the extinct grizzly bear, but it’s important to note that black bears still inhabit many of the state’s rural areas, which extend over 1,000 miles.
Fortunately, the couple’s two dogs are expected to recover fully from their minor injuries sustained during the altercation.
