Protests Erupt in France Against G7 Summit

On Sunday, tensions escalated in France as police resorted to tear gas during protests against the upcoming Group of Seven summit. Protesters, numbering around 20,000, began their march peacefully but later engaged in vandalism, targeting a Tesla car and smashing windows at a United Nations office in Geneva.

Witnesses reported that some demonstrators threw bricks at police as tear gas clouds filled the streets. It’s a scene that perhaps seemed like a culmination of years of protests at G7 events, where activists often voice their concerns about capitalism, globalization, and inequality.

Some participants expressed that the G7 symbolizes excessive political and economic power, especially significant given Elon Musk’s recent declaration as the world’s first trillionaire. One protester, Pippa Sosie, shared her perspective, stating, “For me, this is a rally of the rich that shows once again how the rich can get richer while the poor are left behind.”

The summit is set to occur from Monday to Wednesday in Evian-les-Bains, located near Lake Geneva. Leaders from major countries, including France, the UK, Canada, and the US, are expected to gather, with the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine topping the agenda. There’s speculation that discussions with President Trump may also arise, especially concerning a tentative agreement to address the US and Israel’s conflict with Iran.

In anticipation of possible unrest, businesses in Geneva have boarded up their windows, and a heavy police presence has been deployed. Some activists have voiced their concerns about the police tactics, suggesting that the show of force aims to intimidate participants. Another protester, Clelia Collin, added, “The values that the G7 represents are completely misogynistic and contribute to inequality.”
