Spike Lee and Championship Rings
Comedian Kevin Hart and ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith have joined the conversation about whether celebrities should receive championship rings, especially after New York Knicks superfan Spike Lee celebrated his first title in 53 years.
In an Instagram video shared on Sunday, Hart made a passionate case for Lee, stating, “Give Spike the ring.” Hart pointed out how Lee has likely spent millions on tickets over the last four decades, arguing, “Spike deserves a championship ring.” He emphasized the need for the Knicks to honor Lee, suggesting it’s time for a recognition of his loyalty.
Smith echoed Hart’s sentiment on social media, affirming his support for Lee. He stated, “No Knicks fan deserves this more than him,” in response to a tweet advocating for Lee to receive a ring.
Reactions from fans were mixed. One user expressed skepticism, noting that while Lee might be a passionate supporter, “this guy can’t take any shots or get any rebounds.” They preferred to let him enjoy the festivities like any other fan. Another voiced a firm stance against it, saying, “No. Players, coaches, executives, and other members of the organization receive rings, not fans, even if they are superfans.”
There were also voices in support of Lee. A fan commented, “Let’s give this man flowers! And a ring.” Others added that fans like Lee are integral to the team’s spirit, with one stating, “He was there through the good, the bad, and the ugly when many wouldn’t even watch on TV.”
Unlike other celebrity fans who receive complimentary seats, Lee pays for his tickets. As of March 2020, he was spending around $300,000 annually for two courtside season tickets. He has held a ticket since 1985, following the Knicks’ drafting of Patrick Ewing, and while it’s unclear how much he has spent in total, it’s reasonable to assume it’s in the millions.
Additionally, Lee made the effort to travel for playoff games in various cities, including Atlanta and Philadelphia, as well as Saturday’s championship clincher. After the Knicks’ victory, he was already looking ahead, telling ABC, “Back to back!”
