Vice President J.D. Vance Reflects on Controversial Comments
In his forthcoming memoir, “Communion,” Vice President J.D. Vance describes his earlier comments about “childless cat ladies” as “one of the stupidest things I’ve ever said.” This statement gained significant attention during the 2024 campaign.
Vance acknowledges the “boneheaded comments” he made, but he also notes that they were effective in stirring reactions, which was, perhaps, part of his intention. He reflects, “One of the stupidest things I ever said was when I claimed that the entire Democratic Party’s ‘childless cat ladies’ were ruining our country,” as reported by NBC News.
He elaborates, “This comment sparked a firestorm twice, once at its outset and then again years later during a political campaign. It was a boneheaded comment, one deliberately (and successfully) provocative rather than enlightening.”
The Vice President initially made his remarks during a 2021 guest appearance on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, targeting Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. These comments resurfaced amid his campaign against President Trump.
Vance had stated, “We are effectively run by the Democratic Party in this country through our corporate oligarchy, by a bunch of childless cat women who are miserable with their lives and their own choices, and therefore want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” He went on to claim that figures like AOC, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg represent a future Democratic Party led by individuals without children.
Interestingly, pop icon Taylor Swift embraced the moniker “childless cat lady” as a point of pride in her support for Harris and Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz.
Vance’s memoir, which discusses his journey to Catholicism, is set to be released on Tuesday.
