Virginia school district faces allegations of anti-Christian discrimination following email hinting at canceling Christmas break

Fairfax County School District Faces Accusations of Anti-Christian Bias

Parents of students in Fairfax County Public Schools have expressed concerns that their objections to the proposed changes to holiday breaks are being overlooked, attributing the disregard to anti-Christian sentiments.

The district recently surveyed parents on whether they would consider cutting holiday breaks, including Christmas, in order to extend instructional days on the calendar.

One parent, Stephanie Lundquist-Arora, shared her thoughts on Fox News, emphasizing that this is yet another move to diminish Christianity’s presence in the educational environment. She stated, “Fairfax leaders have an anti-Christian bias.”

Lundquist-Arora highlighted previous actions by the Board of Education, which included changing the spring break schedule to distance it from Easter and recognizing Transgender Visibility Day during the Easter holiday in 2024.

She noted that many parents in the community reacted with disbelief to the survey’s proposal. “This is just one more instance reflecting their anti-Christian beliefs,” she remarked.

The email sent by the school district mentioned valuing parental feedback during calendar planning. It included a survey that asked parents about potential changes, one being to shorten winter break or to eliminate holidays that acknowledge various religious and cultural events, like Christmas and Eid al-Fitr.

Unfortunately, for many parents, all the provided options felt equally undesirable. In a response to media inquiries, district board members revealed they’ve received numerous messages advocating for extended periods of five-day school weeks, which currently are less than half of the school weeks available.

Lundquist-Arora recounted that the district has disregarded significant parental feedback in the past as well. She recalled a previous survey about coed classrooms for sex education, where 84% of parents were against it, yet the superintendent dismissed the results and initiated a pilot program nonetheless. “Even though my friends oppose the neglect of Christmas, it seems like the district won’t heed our voices because they’ve already made up their minds,” she concluded.
