Newsom Claims Trump Directed DOJ Investigation
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) stated on Monday that President Donald Trump instructed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. However, several reporters noted that the federal inquiry actually began before Trump returned to office.
In a video posted on social media, Newsom expressed that federal agents have been reaching out to individuals connected to his family, including former employees and long-time friends. He alleged that the investigators seem to be searching for evidence of a crime rather than focusing on any specific wrongdoing that has already been established.
“Federal agents are knocking on the doors of family members, friends, and former employees, not because they found a crime; they’re just trying to find one. They’re demanding records and abusing the grand jury process, digging up documents that they’ve collected at random over the years,” Newsom remarked. “Donald Trump isn’t targeting me solely due to my critical tweets. He’s after me because I’m contemplating a presidential run and he despises how I expose his lies and deceit.”
Despite Governor Newsom’s assertions, journalist Adam Housley stated that this investigation commenced during former President Joe Biden’s tenure.
“It’s a minor thing. They have been under federal investigation since the Biden administration. This is nothing new,” Housley wrote online.
He elaborated that the inquiry encompasses multiple components linked to Napa Valley in California. Initially, the matter was handled by officials from the FBI’s Sacramento field office before being transferred to the San Francisco branch.
“There are several divisions in this investigation, some connected to Napa Valley,” Housley added. “I heard that it was initially managed by FBI agents in Sacramento, but then handed over to the San Francisco office.”
In a different report, Semaphore’s White House correspondent Shelby Talcott mentioned that sources revealed “several investigations” concerning Newsom. The focus appears to be on Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s taxes and Newsom’s chief of staff. Talcott noted that the inquiry originated in Sacramento and involved a whistleblower.
“Sources privy to the situation say there are ‘several investigations’ underway related to Governor Gavin Newsom. It appears the inquiries are focused on his wife’s taxes and his chief of staff,” Talcott noted. “These investigations are reportedly not coming from the main Justice Department, but are based out of Sacramento and involve whistleblowers.”
In March, it was reported that Newsom had raised over $4.4 million from organizations and celebrities for the California Partners Project, a nonprofit founded by Jennifer Siebel Newsom in 2020. The report indicated that these donations were facilitated through legal yet controversial funding methods that resemble loopholes.
