Trump at G7: Iran Agreement Will Lead to 'Significant Achievements for the World'; Demining Efforts in Progress, Strait of Hormuz Set to Fully Open Friday

Trump’s Comments on Iran Deal and Strait of Hormuz

Evian-les-Bains, France – President Donald Trump spoke with reporters on Monday, praising the Iran deal as a major success, stating it helps ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons. He also announced that the Strait of Hormuz would fully reopen by Friday as demining operations make progress.

These remarks were made during a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the G7 summit in Evian.

“All agreements are signed. The strait is already partially operational. They are currently locating some mines they’ve discovered, but ships have started to move out. It should be fully operational by Friday,” Trump said.

Brent crude oil prices dipped below $80 by early Monday afternoon, given that around one-fifth of the world’s oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

“We had a good relationship with Iran before. It’s a different group of leaders now. We faced several challenges, but we’ve managed to come to an agreement. I believed we needed to respond strongly. I thought about it again, but I made my decision before further action was needed. I think great things are in store for the Middle East. The oil situation has improved, and the stock market is trending upwards, reaching record highs,” he added.

He emphasized that the deal “will be immensely successful for the world because oil supplies have been constrained for quite some time.”

Trump stated that Vice President J.D. Vance would attend the signing ceremony set for Friday in Geneva, Switzerland, which is not far from Evian.

When asked about his own attendance, Trump replied, “It depends. JD will be there in my stead. He was supposed to be present initially. I’ll likely have departed by then. We have a dinner planned in a day and a half that might keep me there late, so I may or may not make it, but JD is there specifically for the signing.”

Responding to another question, Trump noted that a memorandum of understanding with Iran would be disclosed “soon,” labeling it a “very powerful document” that stands apart from former President Barack Obama’s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which is also known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Macron remarked that Trump’s deal is “very important” and would address the nuclear issue, given Iran’s commitment to discontinue its nuclear ambitions. He stated that France is prepared to “do its part and participate in the international community’s involvement in support of this agreement.”

France and Britain are leading a coalition aimed at supporting the demining and patrolling efforts in the Straits.
