USD/IDR Currency Pair Sees Decline

The USD/IDR has experienced its second consecutive day of decline, trading around 17,720 during European hours on Tuesday. There’s quite a bit of uncertainty in the market, yet this currency pair continues to slip, even as the U.S. dollar slows its daily gains. Traders are adopting a cautious stance, awaiting updates regarding Iran’s unresolved nuclear situation.

Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned a memorandum of understanding aimed at resolving the conflict and reopening the blocked Strait of Hormuz. However, market players are still feeling anxious. A key point to note is that the formal text of this agreement hasn’t been shared by either Washington or Iran, leaving a lot open to interpretation.

The dollar might see additional support on Wednesday. Traders are beginning to factor in that the Federal Reserve could keep its benchmark interest rate steady in the target range of 3.50% to 3.75%. This speculation is likely tied to rising inflation in the U.S., fueled by escalating energy prices linked to Middle Eastern tensions. There’s considerable interest in the upcoming news conference, where new Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s strategies will be closely observed as the central bank navigates its next chapter.

As for the Indonesian rupiah (IDR), it may struggle against the U.S. dollar due to a decrease in foreign exchange reserves, which point to the growing costs of central bank intervention. This internal pressure is intensified by external trade concerns, particularly with the impending 18% tariff from the U.S. set for July 24th, affecting both exports and capital flows. However, ahead of Thursday’s Bank Indonesia meeting, there might be some limitations on the rupiah’s weakness as traders anticipate policymakers to adopt a hawkish bias to safeguard the currency.
