Historic Night for Pete Crow Armstrong
Pete Crow Armstrong stepped up for the Chicago Cubs in their game against the Colorado Rockies, showing an emotional side from the start. It was an unforgettable evening at Wrigley Field.
With a notable five-game hitting streak and boasting a .392 batting average in June, Crow Armstrong ignited the game with a crucial home run to right-center field. In his next chance at the plate, he struck again—almost hitting another line drive but settling for a triple instead.
As early as the third inning, the possibility of him hitting for the cycle was already in discussions. By the fifth, excitement peaked when he sped down the first base line for a double, turning quiet murmurs into widespread cheers.
On that night, the stage was set not only for the old-fashioned cycles but also the rare reverse cycles. In the seventh inning, after seeing just three pitches, he hit a line drive that sealed his place in history.
Cubs historian Ed Hartig reported that Crow Armstrong became the first player in Cubs history to achieve a cycle in reverse order. Shortly after, though, he made an error at first base—a moment he described as unfortunate, especially given the game’s tense situation when the Cubs led 2-1.
Fortunately, PCA had another opportunity in the eight inning. With Colorado ahead 4-2, he managed to hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a teammate and narrowing the deficit.
While Crow Armstrong played a vital role up to that point, some might say Lady Luck smiled on the Cubs in the ninth. With bases loaded and no outs, second baseman Pedro Ramirez hit a single that tied the game. The Rockies’ relief pitcher then walked Matt Shaw, leading to Chicago’s thrilling walk-off victory.
This win marked the ninth walk-off of the season for the Cubs, who are no strangers to dramatic finishes, leading all of Major League Baseball. Their May was a wild ride; they began with eight consecutive wins before falling into a ten-game losing streak. As they wade through June with six wins against seven losses, it’s clear they’re eager to build on their momentum and secure a win against the league-leading Rockies.
