USA 250: Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones was born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta, Georgia, and became one of the most celebrated amateur golfers ever. He showed an early knack for the game, reaching the third round of the U.S. Amateur at just 14 years old. Over his career, he clinched 13 major titles, all as an amateur—a record that still holds today. Notably, in 1930, he made significant strides in his golfing journey.

Every season on the PGA Tour brings its own stories, but many elements remain the same. There are new winners at various events, each with their unique journey to the top. It’s the captivating tales that keep us connected to sports, especially in golf, which promises a lot in 2026.

Take Gary Woodland, for example. He won the Houston Open in March, just a couple of years after brain surgery and facing PTSD. And then there’s Anthony Kim, who triumphed at LIV Golf Australia after a long hiatus. February was certainly a standout moment for him. Plus, Brandt Snedeker, at 45, returned strong, taking home the Myrtle Beach Classic after major health procedures.

Bud Corey finally gets what he earned

Bud Corey represents the spirit of perseverance. Before turning pro in 2011, he spent three years at the University of Alabama, distinguishing himself as both a junior golf talent and an All-American.

Initially, Corey might’ve been seen as a mid-level player on the tour—performing adequately to retain his card but often falling short of higher placements. His path took a sharp turn after a devastating car accident in June 2018. While he was a passenger, the crash caused multiple severe injuries, including broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

After multiple surgeries, Corey managed to return to the game five months later. Yet complications arose, preventing him from competing in tournaments from September 2020 to February 2024. Most individuals might have thrown in the towel, but Corey exhibited relentless determination. By October 2024, he secured a top-five finish, and 2025 saw him claim four top-10 finishes across 22 events. Despite these improvements, winning on the PGA Tour remains a tough challenge.

Heading into the Canadian Open, Corey’s consistency was promising, but it was at this event that all the struggles and hard work finally bore fruit. Nearly eight years post-accident, during his 239th tour appearance, Corey found himself winning. With a final round score of 65, he claimed victory by a two-point margin.

After the win, Corey reflected, “There were so many events I didn’t win, but considering everything my family endured during my absence, it felt like the right moment to finally win while they were all here.” He recounted a deeply emotional moment as he prepared for a crucial putt, overwhelmed as he spotted his family cheering him on.

The impressive golf he displayed was overshadowed by the emotional culmination of pride and relief shared with his family on that special day.

Returning to Shinnecock

Next up, all eyes turn to the U.S. Open, hosted at the esteemed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. This tournament captures immense attention. The last U.S. Open at this iconic location took place in 2018, culminating in a nail-biting finish with Brooks Koepka taking home his second title.

This year, the spotlight shines on Scottie Scheffler, not just because he’s the world’s top player aiming for a career Grand Slam, but also due to the fact that Sunday marks both his 30th birthday and Father’s Day. The imagery of him celebrating with his family while holding a trophy is easy to envision. However, Scheffler hasn’t won a tournament since January, leading many to speculate on whether he can break that streak at such a significant event.

While Scheffler leads the favorites, other familiar names like Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm will feature prominently. The challenge at Shinnecock promises a compelling blend of high competition and tough conditions.

As the U.S. Open approaches, fans can expect exhilarating play, heightened challenges, and the potential for memorable moments. It’s these narratives and predictions that keep us all engaged in the sport.
