Violent Clashes at Iran vs. New Zealand Match

Following Iran’s World Cup match against New Zealand on Monday, violent confrontations erupted between pro-Shah and pro-regime supporters. The exact cause of the clashes remains unclear, but video footage captured several individuals exchanging blows in the stands of SoFi Stadium, a venue in Los Angeles.

In the footage, one man wearing a blue shirt struck another man multiple times, eventually knocking him to the ground. After a short struggle, officials intervened to separate the combatants.

Interestingly, one of those involved sported a white shirt with the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag. Outside the stadium, pro-regime and pro-Shah demonstrators could be seen yelling at one another, with pro-Shah supporters chanting “Pahlavi,” in reference to the late monarch, Reza Pahlavi.

A pro-Shah account on Instagram labeled a clip of the scene as “Supporter of terrorists,” reflecting the deep divisions among the supporters.

Striker Mehdi Taremi expressed disappointment, claiming that the Iranian team was effectively expelled from the U.S. immediately after the match, calling the situation a “disaster.” He mentioned that the team’s early departure felt unjust, stating, “They are everywhere and we are very ashamed of them.”

Iran and New Zealand ended their match in a 2-2 draw on Monday, and shortly afterward, the Iranian players left the United States, citing “oppressive” treatment.

In an earlier statement, President Donald Trump had warned the Iranian players about coming to America, suggesting it might endanger their safety. Taremi elaborated on the pressure the team faces, expressing concerns about unplanned exits impacting their performance.

“We have to leave Los Angeles now, but it’s not good for us. It’s not good for football. In the World Cup, we have to prepare well for the next match. It adds a lot of stress for the players and staff. I think FIFA should offer us more support,” he remarked.

Despite ongoing tensions between Iran and the U.S., a peace agreement is reportedly set to be finalized soon. Trump announced on social media that the deal with Iran had been completed, offering congratulations to all involved.
