Annapolis Police Look Into Alarming Rumor About ICE Using a Parking Lot

Maryland Police Address Suspected ICE Activity

Maryland State Police shared details about “suspected ICE activity” in a Facebook update on Monday, assuring the public that police had no direct contact with federal agency vehicles.

Earlier that day, the Annapolis Police Department (APD) received word from a local resident about a vehicle thought to be from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spotted in the APD parking lot just before noon. Upon checking security cameras, APD confirmed they saw a vehicle believed to be affiliated with ICE enter the lot, followed by another vehicle. Interestingly, in March 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) listed Annapolis as a “sanctuary jurisdiction,” though it was later removed from that list, as reported by NPR.

According to APD’s statement, “The vehicle, thought to be connected to ICE, waited until the second vehicle left the parking lot before it did the same.” Importantly, they noted that the ICE vehicle did not enter any restricted areas or interact with APD personnel.

In a statement released in April 2026, the city of Annapolis and APD emphasized that they do not coordinate with immigration enforcement, either legally or operationally. They clarified that “ICE does not inform APD or city leaders when it operates within city limits, which aligns with practices in other areas.” Furthermore, they mentioned that there is no legal means to prevent federal law enforcement from utilizing public parking facilities.

Moreover, the city asserted that being an undocumented immigrant is not, technically, a crime. According to 8 United States Code § 1325, actions considered “inappropriate entry” into the United States are often about the manner and timing of the entry, and involve evasion or misrepresentation.

While regarding the matter further, APD declined to comment, and attempts to reach ICE and DHS did not elicit any responses.
