Barry Moore, supported by Trump, secures victory in Alabama Republican Senate runoff

Even though he wasn’t on the ballot, a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump has secured the Republican nomination in Alabama’s Senate runoff elections.

According to the Associated Press, Congressman Barry Moore, a supporter of Trump, has defeated his opponent, ex-Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson, in this Republican race in Alabama. Both candidates finished in the top spots during last month’s primary, but, since no one achieved over 50% of the vote, they advanced to a runoff.

Moore received backing from prominent political figures, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. He’s viewed as a strong contender to follow Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is opting to run for governor this year instead of seeking re-election.

Moore has a background that includes founding a waste-hauling company and serving as a state representative before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020. It’s interesting to note that he was among the first politicians to support Trump during Trump’s initial presidential campaign in 2015.

Moore is now representing Alabama’s 1st Congressional District and is a member of the House Freedom Caucus, known for its conservative stance.

On the other hand, Hudson ran as a challenger, narrowly beating state Attorney General Steve Marshall to enter the runoff. He has an intriguing background too—he’s not only a military veteran but also has experience as a sheriff’s deputy, firefighter, and small business owner. Additionally, he chairs a nonprofit aimed at training law enforcement to tackle human trafficking.

Hudson earned endorsements from various conservative figures, including then-Senator Markwayne Mullin, now serving as Homeland Security Secretary, and Tim Sheehy from the National Gun Rights Association PAC. However, despite his efforts, he couldn’t quite match up to Moore’s support, who is now expected to compete in November against either pet-care entrepreneur Dakarai Larriet or attorney Everett Wess.
