Rick Jackson secures victory in Georgia GOP governor runoff against Trump-supported Burt Jones

Georgia Gubernatorial Runoff: Trump-Endorsed Candidate Falls Short

In Atlanta, Georgia, Lt. Governor Bert Jones was unable to secure victory on Tuesday in the Republican gubernatorial runoff, despite support from President Donald Trump. He lost to billionaire businessman Rick Jackson, according to reports.

Jackson, who has poured over $100 million of his own funds into his campaign, will now compete against former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the upcoming general election. Bottoms, who previously served in the Biden administration, won the Democratic gubernatorial primary decisively, avoiding a runoff by securing the majority over six other candidates.

In the final days leading up to the runoff, Jackson received backing from Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, known for his conservative stance.

Jackson, reflecting on his campaign, said he was inspired by Trump, believing that bringing business solutions to Georgia could make a significant impact. He mentioned how he sees similarities between his approach and Trump’s, asserting, “I want to do exactly the same thing in Georgia that he does federally.”

Interestingly, Jackson was relatively unknown to Georgia voters until recently. His narrative, including growing up in a nursing home and building a business without a college degree, has now gained traction, largely due to extensive advertising.

Jackson emphasized that he represents the outsider perspective, similar to Trump, which he thinks resonates with voters. Cruz, who joined Jackson at a rally, praised him as having an extraordinary history and deemed the election too critical to lose.

Jones, the other candidate in the runoff, criticized Jackson for soliciting external support, highlighting a preference for having the president’s backing. He also scrutinized Jackson’s history of donations to Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans, suggesting these might alienate him from the party’s core supporters.

The runoff came after Jones and Jackson emerged as the top candidates from a crowded Republican primary where they competed against Attorney General Chris Carr and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, among others.

About Jones, he has a background in sports as a former captain of the University of Georgia football team, has ties to the oil industry, and held a state senate position before being elected lieutenant governor in 2022. He has openly lauded Trump and received his endorsement last August.

In a late endorsement before the runoff, current Governor Brian Kemp expressed his support for Jones, asserting that he embodies the qualities necessary to lead the state effectively. He stressed the importance of winning this election, warning against the potential consequences of a loss.

While Trump was not on the ballot, his influence on the Republican landscape continues to face scrutiny and challenges. Recently, however, he celebrated a comeback when another favored candidate, Pamela Evette, succeeded in the Republican primary in South Carolina.

In other races, long-time Trump ally Senator Lindsey Graham avoided a runoff in the Republican Senate primary, triumphing over five challengers, including conservative businessman Mark Lynch, who criticized Graham over his support for various issues.
