Jeff Bezos Predicts AI Will Create Labor Shortages
At the Vivatech technology conference in Paris, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos expressed a strong belief that artificial intelligence will not render humans obsolete; instead, it may lead to labor shortages.
Discussing various initiatives, including his aerospace company Blue Origin and a new AI startup, Prometheus, Bezos shared a positive outlook on how technology could benefit humanity.
“Many, including some intelligent individuals, worry that AI will replace humans,” he stated. “I don’t share this belief at all. In fact, I think AI will lead to a labor shortage.”
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that half of Americans are apprehensive about job losses within their households due to advancing AI technology.
Bezos, currently one of the world’s wealthiest individuals with a net worth around $250 billion, suggested that humans have endless tasks to tackle, which AI could help facilitate by breaking down existing barriers.
He also emphasized the importance of space exploration, indicating that one aim is to relocate environmentally harmful industries away from Earth. Blue Origin is set to compete with Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the space industry.
“If we can make space travel reliable and affordable, and extract materials from asteroids and the moon, we might restore our planet to its pre-industrial condition,” Bezos remarked.
David Limp, CEO of Blue Origin, accompanied Bezos and mentioned that reconstruction of the company’s New Glenn rocket launch pad in Florida had begun following a recent explosion during testing.
Musk, on his end, has also shared ambitious plans for space ahead of SpaceX’s IPO, including visions for building cities on the moon and Mars. In a discussion with JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon last week, he mentioned ideas like launching an AI data center in space and even vacationing on the moon.
