Update on Private Jet Crash in Texas

Update – 3:20pm – A private jet crash on a busy Texas highway has shocked both local residents and the broader community, prompting a significant federal investigation into its final moments.

One person was killed, and several others sustained injuries. As emergency responders and federal agencies work to reconstruct the timeline, details are becoming clearer regarding the victims and the mechanical failure that led to the crash.

The deceased individual has been identified as Joshua Baer, 50, a well-known entrepreneur in Austin’s tech scene and the founder of a startup incubator called Capital Factory. The other five individuals on board the Cessna 680A Citation Latitude, which included two pilots and three additional passengers, survived and are currently stable in the hospital.

Unfortunately, the repercussions of the crash went beyond the aircraft itself. The plane struck a vehicle traveling on the highway, and the driver was also hospitalized but is reported to be in stable condition. The fire that ensued caused harm to first responders as well, with five officers from Laredo receiving treatment for severe smoke inhalation during containment efforts.

The flight, managed by NetJets, was on its way from San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, to Austin when things turned dire, according to Laredo International Airport officials.

Just before 10 pm local time, the crew declared an emergency due to severe mechanical issues, citing a combination of low fuel and total power loss. However, communication with the cockpit ceased shortly after, leading to the aircraft losing altitude and crashing.

A dramatic rescue operation immediately unfolded on the highway, vividly captured by the cameras of passing motorists and witnesses. Bystanders, unwilling to wait for emergency services, parked their vehicles and rushed toward the burning plane.

Using whatever tools were available, bystanders broke the cockpit glass and pried open the twisted door frame. Their efforts allowed the pilot and three teenagers to escape from the burning cabin. The last remaining passenger required even more courage, as firefighters had to enter the heavily smoke-filled fuselage to save him.

A joint investigation is currently in progress, led by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators are examining the wreckage along Loop 20, mapping the debris field, and piece together how the modern jet experienced such a catastrophic power failure.

NetJets has also activated its crisis response team to support the families of the victims and ensure full cooperation with federal investigations.

Public Reaction

Senator Ted Cruz expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “Heidi and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Josh Baer and the tragic plane crash in Laredo. Josh was one of the most important innovators in America. He made Texas a world leader.”

Background on the Incident

8:40am~ Authorities confirmed one death after the private jet crash on a Laredo highway.

Laredo Police spokesman Jose Baeza stated the incident occurred on Tuesday around 10 pm CST, involving six people on board, all of whom were ejected from the aircraft. Initially, details regarding the fatality weren’t disclosed pending notification of family members.

The crash took place on the northbound section of Loop 20, leading to the closure of both sides of the highway. A northbound vehicle collided with parts of the aircraft. In a social media update, police indicated that the area would remain closed for most of the day.

Baeza noted that five responding officers were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, emphasizing the need to manage the highly flammable aviation fuel involved.

Federal agencies, including the FBI, are already on the scene, as confirmed by Baeza.

According to the FAA, the jet was a Cessna 680A operated by NetJets, which acknowledged the crash, reporting one injury and one death.

The FAA further elaborated that the plane was traveling from San Jose del Cabo to Austin. The National Transportation Safety Board will take the lead in the investigation.

Videos circulating online depict police and bystanders working together to rescue those trapped inside the aircraft. Baeza called on anyone with recordings of the crash to share them with investigators.
