Olivia Wilde shares Jason Sudeikis' birthday remark that led to the end of their relationship

Olivia Wilde Reflects on Relationship with Jason Sudeikis

Olivia Wilde recently shared a personal moment from her birthday that illuminated the state of her relationship with Jason Sudeikis. As she drove home, a remark from Sudeikis struck her: it became clear that their relationship had reached its end, a realization both had been reluctant to accept.

In a rare interview, the “Don’t Worry Darling” actress opened up about the emotional challenges surrounding their breakup. This painful exchange, she noted, played a significant role in shaping the themes of her upcoming film, “The Invite.”

Wilde mentioned, “It’s no surprise that I created a film focused on relationships and the complexities involved in knowing when it’s time to call it quits. It’s a gradual process.” She emphasized how tough that can be.

Reflecting back to March 10, 2020, Wilde recalled being in a tumultuous phase with Sudeikis, when he told her, “Olivia, I don’t know you.” She recounted, “On my way home from my birthday party, I asked about a present, and he responded with a question instead. We realized how disconnected we had become.”

That moment forced her to face the reality of their crumbling relationship. “One of the important points I wanted to convey in ‘The Invite’ is that sometimes, in trying to connect, you end up completely losing touch with one another,” she explained. It was a hard truth, and it led them to accept that their romantic chapter was closing. Just two days later, the world went into lockdown due to the pandemic.

Despite their separation, Wilde expressed deep appreciation for Sudeikis as a co-parent to their two children, Otis and Daisy. “Sharing custody reshapes your perspective on parenting,” she said, praising Sudeikis as a “very capable co-parent.” She believes that this shared responsibility enhances the connection they have with their kids.

Wilde described the dynamic as feeling superhero-like, not because of specific skills, but due to the identities they adopted as parents. “It’s about showing up for the kids,” she added, highlighting the importance of being present during their time together.

While they navigate co-parenting, Wilde shared that the aftermath of their breakup has been one of her life’s toughest experiences. She described a particularly unsettling moment at CinemaCon 2022 when she was served custody papers on stage. “Being handed those papers publicly was one of the most humiliating experiences I’ve faced,” she recalled, though she later clarified that Sudeikis was unaware the incident would occur in such a public setting.

Wilde explained that CinemaCon is an important venue for Hollywood, amplifying her vulnerability during that incident. “I couldn’t believe this was happening to me,” she reflected, noting that it’s a bizarre experience that, in hindsight, has made her stronger.

Taking a final note, Wilde commented that navigating such trials makes one feel they can overcome anything life throws at them.
