Tragic Accident in Central Park Claims Life of 18-Year-Old Tourist
An 18-year-old boy from India, who was visiting New York, tragically lost his life on Wednesday when he was struck by a horse that had pulled a carriage, according to authorities.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that Romanchi Mahajan died following a horse-drawn carriage incident in Central Park, as reported by NBC. The horse reportedly went out of control, veering into West Drive where it collided with a second carriage and overturned near Tavern on the Green, according to reports from Fox News Digital.
Emergency services responded shortly after 2:47 p.m., transporting Mahajan to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, none of the other passengers in the carriage sustained serious injuries, law enforcement stated.
Witnesses described the quick actions of Christina Hansen, the carriage driver who rushed to the scene. She tied the errant horse to a pole and mentioned that the driver of the runaway carriage had returned, seemingly to settle the situation.
TWU Local 100, the union that represents carriage drivers in New York, took action against the carriage driver for his alleged behavior. Vice-president Alexander Kemp mentioned that the horse had only been working in the park for about six weeks prior to the incident. The driver has since been suspended, and the horse has been retired from duty.
Kemp criticized the driver for stepping away from the vehicle to take photos, a move he said put everyone at risk. “The horse ran away for reasons we still don’t fully understand. This is simply unacceptable,” he remarked.
The NYPD is continuing its investigation into the accident. In a related matter, the Central Park Conservancy expressed concerns about the horse-drawn carriage industry, using this tragic event to back a legal case against it. A spokesperson remarked, “We had anticipated such a tragedy when we called for a ban on horse-drawn carriages due to safety concerns. A young man lost his life while enjoying our parks, which is a steep cost for such an outdated practice.”
New York City Council President Julie Menin and City Councilwoman Lynn Schulman extended their condolences to Mahajan’s family and friends. They referenced the Rider Act, a piece of legislation aimed at regulating the horse-drawn carriage industry, and underscored that discussions will take place in Congress next month.
