Pennsylvania House Approves AI Disclosure Bill

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved a bill that mandates companies to reveal any artificial intelligence-generated content used in the marketing of consumer products.

Introduced by Democratic state Rep. Chris Pieri, the legislation aims to ensure that AI-generated materials—like images, audio, video, and text—are clearly disclosed. “We ensure transparency by providing consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions and avoid being misled,” Pieri stated.

Pieri emphasized that the bill operates on a straightforward premise: “If it’s AI, we have to say it’s AI.” He believes that consumers deserve to know the authenticity of products they intend to purchase. Disclosures must be clear and presented alongside the content itself to help consumers feel safer in their buying choices.

The bill now moves to the Pennsylvania Senate for further deliberation. Pieri remarked, “Artificial intelligence is becoming a more familiar part of our everyday lives. As AI develops further, it gets trickier to verify the authenticity of generated materials, which could lead to misleading information and images.”

Pieri also urged fellow lawmakers to establish common-sense standards to aid consumers in making well-informed decisions.

In response to inquiries, Pieri’s office directed the Daily Caller News Foundation to Wednesday’s press release. There was no reply from Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s office regarding his thoughts on the bill’s support.

If the Senate passes the bill and it receives approval from Shapiro, it will become law within a year.

In related news, a growing number of advertising executives—83%—report integrating AI into their creative processes, a rise from 60% in 2024. A study also found that 89% of these advertisers disclosed their AI use at least occasionally, though fewer than half claimed they used it consistently.

As the November midterm elections approach, political campaign ads that utilize AI deepfake technologies are on the rise, as noted by Axios.
