Trump finalizes Iran agreement, criticizes 'fools' after reactions from Senators Cruz and Cassidy

US-Iran Peace Agreement Signed

Initially, President Donald Trump aimed to finalize the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding in Switzerland on Friday. However, he seemed eager to finalize the deal sooner to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump was joined by French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The agreement, reached at the Palace of Versailles, comes with Macron acknowledging, “I can tell you this hasn’t been easy.”

“Reagan is rolling over in his grave.”

President of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, acting as the main mediator in these peace discussions, pointed out that the immediate action required from Iran is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the U.S. is set to lift its naval blockade.

The White House celebrated the agreement, labeling it a significant accomplishment. According to White House Press Secretary Olivia Wales, “Following the historic destruction of Iran’s military power by Operation Epic Fury, President Trump and his team have signed a results-oriented memorandum that furthers U.S. interests by ending fighting, lowering energy prices, and pressuring Iran to abandon its nuclear pursuits.”

Post-signing, gasoline prices dipped, and U.S. Treasury and stock futures saw an uptick.

Some Democratic lawmakers, along with certain officials in Iran and Israel, voiced their concerns about the deal. Republican representatives also raised their voices, criticizing aspects of the final agreement’s preamble.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) expressed his fears, saying, “History has shown that giving billions to theocratic radicals who threaten our lives is unwise. The president’s advisors may have led him astray.”

Cruz was alluding to one of the agreement’s points, which discussed a commitment from the U.S. to help generate at least $300 billion for Iran’s reconstruction and economic growth.

Additionally, Senator Bill Cassidy voiced similar apprehensions, claiming, “Reagan is rolling over in his grave.” He elaborated that Iran remains a looming nuclear threat and could exploit this situation to strengthen its infrastructure.

Nikki Haley, a former presidential candidate, and departing Senator Thom Tillis also shared their critiques, suggesting the agreement would enable Iran to escalate its nuclear ambitions. Haley remarked, “Funding the country we just weakened would be a grave error.”

Conversely, not everyone opposed the agreement. Senator Lindsey Graham supported it, viewing it as beneficial to U.S. interests, emphasizing that it might pave the way for economic stability globally.

On Thursday morning, Trump responded to his critics, stating, “Anyone who thinks my approach to Iran isn’t tough enough while the stock market flourishes is either jealous or simply misguided.”

Recent statistics show that the national average gas price fell to $3.99 a gallon, the lowest in over two and a half months. Brent crude oil prices also declined from wartime highs.
