Contract Negotiations Between MUSC Health and Cigna Healthcare

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Families in the Lowcountry are anxious as MUSC Health and Cigna Healthcare work toward a new contract agreement before the end of June. However, ongoing discussions between the two entities remain unresolved.

The existing contract between MUSC and Cigna is set to expire at the end of this month. Despite months of negotiations, the two parties still seem to have fundamental disagreements about the terms of a potential new agreement.

In a statement regarding the situation, MUSC accused Cigna of prioritizing the interests of its shareholders and investors.

On the other hand, Cigna countered this claim, suggesting that MUSC’s pricing practices are not in line with current market standards.

As negotiations drag on, patients who depend on MUSC for their treatment are worried about the implications if an agreement isn’t reached.

Cody Armstrong, whose husband underwent brain tumor surgery and continues to receive treatment at MUSC, expressed concern about possibly needing to switch providers. “His surgery cost $200,000,” Armstrong remarked. “What kind of medication is he getting, $35,000, $40,000 a month?”

She noted that finding a new doctor could complicate her husband’s ongoing care. “I don’t really think you should shop around for different providers,” she added thoughtfully.

Similarly, Kayla Turbeville is keeping a close eye on the negotiations as her 4-year-old son, Fisher, who has been diagnosed with Level 2 autism, also receives care at MUSC. “Yesterday, my son Fisher had an MRI scan at MUSC,” Turbeville shared. The hospital has been instrumental in providing resources and support services for their family since Fisher’s diagnosis.

“They gave us a lot of resources and helped us out so much just this year when we were officially diagnosed,” she explained. With the contract expiration looming, the uncertainty weighs heavily on her family. “I don’t know what we’re going to do,” she said, expressing her fears. “It’s scary to think about. We just pray and wait and hope they come to some kind of agreement.”

For now, families affected by this situation are left anxiously awaiting news on whether MUSC and Cigna can finalize an agreement before the current contract ends on June 30.
