Jesse Marsch from Canada gestures to the Qatar coach after serious World Cup injury

Injury Concerns After Canada’s Victory

Jesse Marsh, the Canadian coach, had an unsettling evening after witnessing a serious injury to one of his key players, Ismael Cohn, during a match. This happened while Julen Lopetegui was unavailable, causing some tension on the field.

Marsh expressed his concern following a confident 6-0 win against Qatar in Vancouver. He reported that Cohn suffered a significant injury to his left leg, necessitating immediate medical attention and surgery after he was stretchered off the field in the second half.

“It was right in front of our bench,” Marsh recounted, visibly shaken. “We all heard it. It reminded me of the incident with Tajon (Buchanan) in training a while back.”

“Everyone could hear the bones,” he added, highlighting how intense the situation was. Neither coach commented much on their interactions; however, Marsh noted: “I haven’t spent any time on that. It’s not worth discussing.” Meanwhile, Lopetegui only mentioned, “It’s a matter between him and me.”

As the game wrapped up, the two coaches shared a handshake, during which Lopetegui leaned in to whisper something to Marsh. They held hands for a moment, both raising their free hands before Marsh gestured dismissively, seeming to want to end the conversation.

Marsh later reflected on the match’s intensity, indicating the period prior to the injury had been rather “pretty good.” He suggested that Lopetegui might have fired up his players at halftime when they were behind 3-0, adding an interesting twist to the dynamics during the game.

“It was odd for the entire bench to react that way over a red card when a serious injury just occurred,” he remarked, pointing out the strange behavior in response to Qatar’s physical play.

Cohn’s injury came from a severe slide tackle in the 57th minute, leaving him in obvious pain. The player responsible for the foul, Asim Madibo of Qatar, was shown a red card for the incident.

Following the match, there was a brief scuffle between the teams, likely stemming from the emotional charge after Cohn’s injury.

“Our hearts go out to him. Everyone is shaken by how serious it was. Ismael is a crucial part of the team,” Marsh said. “This is a significant blow for us. He’s been fantastic in the last two matches. You could see him reassuring the crowd despite being injured, highlighting who he is as a person. This team has shown special character in tough times, and I believe today was no exception.”
