'Citizen Vigilante': Director explores migrant violence with unyielding perspective

Coach Uwe Boll’s Unyielding Response to Critics

You definitely can’t say that Uwe Boll lacks resilience. The German director has faced significant criticism over his films, which include titles like Rampage, House of the Dead, and Postal. He even once invited some of his fiercest critics to box him, proposing that the outcome would settle their disagreements.

Boll appears prepared for the backlash, particularly when he attracts labels like “right-wing fascist” for his new film. He seems to shrug off such critiques, almost as if they’re minor jabs in a boxing match he’s used to.

Culture War Result

In many ways, “Citizen Vigilante” represents a bold statement, even for Boll. The film stars Armie Hammer as a man trying to reclaim his life after his career was derailed by personal scandals, all while grappling with his frustration over immigrant-related violence in Europe.

In a way, it evokes a more controversial spin on classic revenge narratives—think “Death Wish,” but with themes that mainstream studios shy away from.

In a conversation with Blaze Lifestyle, Boll acknowledged that critics might dislike “Citizen Vigilante,” which is released in the U.S. today. However, he takes issue with the political implications of their critiques.

“What does the right say about rapists getting away with their crimes?” he questioned, pointing to instances where violent immigrant offenders have received lenient penalties.

Addressing the Offenders

The societal context appears to favor Boll’s perspective, especially with the recent revelations from a British investigation into rape gangs detailing years of systemic abuse.

Boll expresses outrage over reports of sexual offenders receiving minimal consequences, recalling how a judge once excused a perpetrator’s violence due to a troubled upbringing.

“The media described them as traumatized victims of violence… But who could excuse that? They may have suffered, but why should we bring them here?” he questioned.

While he asserts he has no issue with immigration per se—as long as it’s legal—he criticized European media for not being transparent about crime statistics associated with immigrants.

“I have no words. … This is the most absurd thing I’ve ever witnessed,” he expressed, expressing disbelief at how things have unfolded.

Graphic Violence on Screen

In “Citizen Vigilante,” Boll confronts these troubling themes directly. The character played by Hammer takes justice into his own hands after feeling let down by the judicial system.

The violence depicted in the film is unapologetic and raw.

“This film portrays a brutal reality,” he remarked, mentioning that the opening scene contains a shocking murder intended to highlight real public safety concerns.

Frustrated by his own country’s refusal to screen his films, Boll recounted having been outright banned from theaters for allegedly promoting vigilante justice. He argues that such rating decisions are politically motivated.

“If six neo-Nazis assaulted an immigrant, there’d be no backlash. Unfortunately, statistics suggest otherwise,” he noted.

Boll stated that he sought approval from three separate guilds over the film’s rating and received no response after being a member for three decades.

“It’s just silence,” he shared somberly.

On the subject of inciting violence, he emphasized that the true motivation for the film stemmed from anger over local events rather than the film’s violent action itself.

“Every Jason Statham movie promotes violence. He often plays heroes who take the law into their own hands,” he quipped, adding humor to a serious topic.

Boll’s Struggles in the Industry

Unfortunately, facing deportation from Germany wasn’t the only hurdle for Boll when bringing “Citizen Vigilante” to theaters. The film’s cinematographer opted out of crediting the project to avoid jeopardizing his future work opportunities.

Boll mentioned that Croatian authorities had offered him a tax incentive for filming in their country, but this was revoked midway through production.

In a climate where discussions about free speech and censorship are rampant in Hollywood, Boll lamented a lack of support from fellow artists and noted that the situation in Germany is no better.

“Creatives are nervous in Germany… They’re hanging on to state funds,” he explained, conveying a sense of disillusionment.

Choosing Talent Freely

Boll’s critique of immigration isn’t his only focus. He stands out in the industry as someone who doesn’t adhere to the conventional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) rhetoric.

“I hire people based on their talent and qualifications, not on the basis of ethnicity or sexual orientation… That’s how it should be,” he insisted.

His protagonist in “Citizen Vigilante” may share traits with cinematic antiheroes like Clint Eastwood’s iconic characters from the ’70s. Boll shows no interest in idealizing the roles of judge, jury, and executioner.

“He’s not a classic hero… He’s a solitary figure capable of making tough choices. It’s a pragmatic perspective,” he explained. “Viewers might find it debatable… Has he crossed the line?”
