U.S. Men’s National Team Advances in World Cup
The U.S. Men’s National Team had a fantastic start on Friday, continuing their winning streak as they edged past Australia with a 2-0 victory, securing a spot in the finals of the tournament.
This marks the first time since the inaugural World Cup in 1930 that the United States has achieved consecutive World Cup wins.
The match began with a rather familiar twist; in just the 10th minute, a pass from Flo Balogun deflected off Australia’s Cameron Burgess and resulted in an own goal, giving the Americans an early lead. It’s worth noting that this is a first in World Cup history, where a team has benefited from own goals in two consecutive matches.
Following that early goal, the U.S. dominated possession, creating several chances. However, surprisingly, there was a long stretch of about 43 minutes without a shot on goal. Just before halftime, in the 43rd minute, Alex Freeman—who is notably the son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman—managed to score after a free kick was stopped. Initially ruled offside, VAR intervened to overturn the call, igniting the crowd at Seattle’s Lumen Field, as Freeman became the youngest player on the squad to score his first World Cup goal at just 21 years old.
By the 71st minute, Australia had only possessed the ball for around 30% of the match time, while the U.S. maintained over 60%. The Americans have a strong record in World Cup matches when scoring first—11 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw.
Before the game, there was an announcement about Christian Pulisic’s absence due to a calf injury, yet the team played remarkably well without him.
Interestingly, the U.S. team has now scored six goals in the group stages, equalizing the record for that round. With a 2-0 record so far, they sit at the top of their group with six points, while Australia follows in second with three. Paraguay and Turkey, who both have zero points, are set to clash on Friday—this match could influence the group’s final standings.
If Paraguay wins or draws, the U.S. will secure Group D, which opens up a potentially advantageous tie in the Round of 32. On the other hand, if Turkey loses, they will end up at the bottom of the group, prompting the U.S. to perhaps rest key players like Pulisic for future matchups.
The U.S. will next face Türkiye on Thursday in Los Angeles, as they continue their World Cup journey amidst an unpredictable group stage.
