Recently released body camera footage from the Los Angeles Police Department has revealed a disturbing incident where an officer lunges at a dog and subsequently shoots it. This has ignited considerable anger among neighbors, activists, and the dog’s distressed owner.
The video, shared on Friday, captures a tense moment inside a Canoga Park apartment complex shortly after a family had been celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA championship win.
The shooting took place just after 8 p.m. on Saturday when police were called following reports of a woman screaming.
As the footage spread, critics condemned the officers’ actions as unwarranted, demanding clarity on the reasons behind the dog’s death. The police released the video amidst rising public unrest and concerns regarding the justification of the shooting.
The video shows two officers encountering Jameson, a 2-year-old St. Berdoodle, who was enjoying the celebration with his family just moments before the incident.
A photograph taken right before the shooting depicted Jameson in a New York Knicks shirt.
Upon seeing the dog, one officer remarked, “Hey, that’s a big dog.” Another officer added, “That brother won’t bite me.”
Officers requested that Jameson’s owner, Marie Marseille, keep the dog secured, but shortly thereafter, the dog leaped out of the unit and lunged at one of the officers in the hallway.
In response, the officer who was confronted drew his weapon and fired four shots, resulting in Jameson’s death.
Marseille, overwhelmed with grief, stood in shock after witnessing her beloved pet being shot.
“What the hell! What the hell,” she exclaimed. “I can’t believe this is happening.”
Marseille insisted that her dog was never aggressive. The Los Angeles Police Department is currently investigating the shooting and has provided video from two different angles of the incident.
Following the tragic event, cellphone footage capturing the emotional responses from onlookers went viral, intensifying the public outrage. Mayor Karen Bass has since called for a complete explanation regarding the shooting.
As the community continues to express its outrage, a GoFundMe campaign for Jameson and the Marseille family has already raised over $200,000.
In a video statement accompanying the newly released footage, LAPD Lt. Mike Brand mentioned that the investigation is still in its early stages, which may take up to a year to conclude.
“Our understanding of this incident may change as we gather more evidence,” Brand stated. “We won’t determine whether the officers followed established policies until all facts are known.”
