Chakrabarti’s Bid to Replace Pelosi Ends in Defeat

Saikat Chakrabarti, a tech billionaire known for his left-leaning views, invested nearly $10 million of his personal funds in an attempt to succeed Nancy Pelosi for the San Francisco Congressional seat. Unfortunately, his campaign fell short in the general election.

The outcome was not just disappointing in terms of political consequence—he secured victory in only one province—but it was also a financial blow. Analysis indicates that Chakrabarti spent approximately $211.3 for each vote, totaling around $8.85 million for just 42,049 votes.

In comparison, his main competitors spent significantly less. State Senator Scott Wiener emerged as the frontrunner with just $5.86 million raised from both campaign efforts and outside groups. City Supervisor Connie Chung raised around $1.75 million.

Chakrabarti’s financial outlay was notably excessive—he reportedly spent eight times more per vote than Chan, who benefited from Pelosi’s endorsement. This alone has earned Chakrabarti the unfortunate distinction of the highest cost-per-vote in San Francisco history, as reported by Mission Local.

Despite his loss, Chakrabarti offered an explanation in his concession statement, attributing his defeat to the substantial financial backing — approximately $7 million — from sources like AI and cryptocurrency interests. However, the pivotal role of Pelosi’s endorsement of Chan, alongside questions about Chan’s local roots, likely posed significant barriers that Chakrabarti’s funding couldn’t surmount.

Even after his electoral setback, Chakrabarti remains engaged in the political landscape. He expressed support for Chan and reportedly provided around 220 campaign workers to assist her efforts.

Chakrabarti, who previously worked at Stripe, aims to position himself as a prominent left-wing candidate. Throughout his career, he gained notoriety during his time as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff, a role that concluded following conflicts with congressional Democratic leaders, including Pelosi herself.

During the recent primary, Chakrabarti garnered more than 95% of the votes, though he ended up with roughly 18% in the broader contest, while Wiener captured nearly 41% and Chan received about 30%.
