The U.S. men’s national soccer team had another impressive showing at the World Cup on June 19, securing a 2-0 victory over Australia.
This win means the team has already moved on to the Round of 32, although they still have one group stage match remaining against Turkiye on June 25 in Los Angeles.
The defense stood strong during the game, particularly goaltender Matt Freese, who made two crucial saves. He really took charge of the defensive strategy, keeping Australia from scoring.
One of the notable pre-tournament debates was who would be the starting goalkeeper: Freese or Turner, the one who started in 2022. In the end, Manager Mauricio Pochettino opted for Freese, which seems to have worked well so far.
Interestingly, both Freese and his girlfriend, Kelsey Mentzer, aren’t very visible on social media, valuing their privacy. They’ve been a couple since at least 2022 and appear to be going strong.
Although Mentzer doesn’t have a public Instagram profile, she was recently featured in a story shared by Freese after the game against Australia. The story highlights Freese hugging Mentzer along with family members who came to Seattle to watch him play.
Freese’s post included a heartwarming caption, “❤️🤍💙🇺🇸,” with Mentzer proudly wearing a Team USA jersey.
It’s wonderful to witness Mentzer supporting Freese. I think she’ll be right there cheering him on throughout this 2026 World Cup journey.
