Rivalry Heats Up Between Pitchers
Things took a turn on Friday night in a rivalry game when top pitchers Tarik Skubal and Mike Bashir found themselves in an altercation. The two Cy Young Award winners were seen chatting in their dugouts, but the tension seemed to escalate quickly.
It’s not entirely clear what triggered the exchange, but after Skubal struck out Colson Montgomery with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, he made a pointed comment toward the Chicago White Sox dugout, directing it specifically at Vasil.
Vasil appeared taken aback by the incident. He remarked, “Nobody was talking,” seemingly confused about what had incited Skubal’s reaction. He added, “I was on the top bunk, helping and cheering for the team. Before I knew it, I felt like I was being kicked out.”
Skubal later addressed the incident, saying, “I’m a competitive guy… I let my emotions out; it’s part of the way I play. It’s just baseball, going back and forth. It happened. It’s over.” This strikeout was pivotal in maintaining a 2-2 tie at that point in the game. Ultimately, Detroit clinched a 4-3 victory.
The Tigers are feeling the pressure, currently sitting at the bottom of their division after having won the American League Central title last year. Skubal warned that unless they turn things around, fans might see significant changes to the team post-trade deadline.
Looking ahead, Skubal is also in a crucial position himself—set to enter free agency after this season, he’s likely to attract a substantial contract. For context, the biggest deal for a pitcher, both financially and in length, was the 12-year, $325 million agreement that Yoshinobu Yamamoto signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers before even pitching in the MLB.
On the opposite side, the White Sox are currently leading the division despite their tumultuous past season.
