Bill Maher Urges Democrats to Celebrate Patriotism Amidst Trump Discontent
Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” has a straightforward message for Democrats who seem ready to overshadow America’s 250th anniversary celebrations due to their feelings about former President Donald Trump. He argues that if they continue to treat patriotism as something to be embarrassed about, it won’t just disappear in a day.
His remarks came just as the U.S. prepares for Independence Day festivities. President Trump, eager to make a significant splash for this milestone, has planned a substantial celebration. Yet, many Democrats are hesitating to join in—largely due to their dissatisfaction with Trump.
On Friday, Maher criticized both sides of the political spectrum, pointing out that Trump often merges his identity with that of the nation. He mentioned that such behavior is typical of those with authoritarian tendencies, urging people not to participate in that narrative.
He dismissed the notion that unhappiness with the president should spoil the country’s celebrations. “The left half of the country is worried that he’s going to make the anniversary his own,” he remarked, adding, “Of course he would.”
Maher emphasized the significance of the July 4th holiday, encouraging Democrats to keep their focus on celebrating the country itself rather than getting caught up in grievances against Trump.
“This is about America. He’s not America. He’s America’s temporary custodian, America’s employee,” he stated. Maher’s comments were made in light of a recent survey which indicated a split in patriotic spirit; a striking 64% of Republicans plan to display the American flag on July 4th, whereas only 27% of Democrats expressed the same intent.
In his closing remarks, Maher motivated Democrats to enjoy the festivities, suggesting they wouldn’t even have to encounter Trump. “America is still here, especially despite all of President Trump’s nonsense,” he argued, noting that the nation remains thriving and desirable.
He concluded by emphasizing that rejecting patriotism because of political frustrations undermines the very principles of the First Amendment and what America signifies. He reiterated the need for unity in celebrating America, especially on such a monumental occasion.
“Let’s not let this year’s 4th become another excuse for partisan sulking,” Maher said, cheekily adding that they could reserve the 5th for recuperation instead.
