Claude Guillemot, Co-Founder of Ubisoft, Dies in Plane Crash

Claude Guillemot, one of the founders of the renowned French video game company Ubisoft, tragically passed away in a plane crash in La Baule on Friday, as confirmed by the company to Reuters.

Guillemot, who was 69, was traveling with another person aboard a twin-engine Cessna 421, and both unfortunately lost their lives in the incident, according to official reports. The local paper, West France, mentioned that an air show was scheduled for the weekend in that area.

In a statement released on Saturday, Ubisoft expressed its deep sorrow at Guillemot’s passing, calling him a vital figure as both group co-founder and chairman of Guillemot.

Guillemot and four of his brothers established Ubisoft back in 1986. He played an influential role in developing the early mail-order software business. The company, as noted by Reuters, has had a significant impact on the gaming industry.

Yves Guillemot, one of Claude’s brothers, is currently serving as the CEO of Ubisoft. Under his leadership, which has lasted over 30 years, the company has successfully navigated various technological changes and industry shifts, largely due to their strategy of nurturing internal talent and creating original brands.

“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Ubisoft stated in its message to Reuters.

Ubisoft has yet to respond to requests for further comment regarding the tragic event.
