Bed Bath & Beyond Set to Open New Stores in California

Bed Bath & Beyond is making a comeback in California, just three years after closing all its locations during bankruptcy. The retailer has announced plans to open two new co-branded stores in the state “immediately” as part of its strategy to revive physical retail.

These new outlets will be located within The Container Store locations in Los Angeles and Costa Mesa. This move is part of a larger initiative involving the rollout of 22 new co-branded stores across the country.

Both companies have navigated their own financial difficulties recently. In 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy, while The Container Store also faced financial challenges in 2024. Earlier this year, Bed Bath & Beyond’s parent company, Beyond, Inc., revealed it would be acquiring The Container Store, with this new format expected to launch soon.

In this co-branded format, shoppers can expect a seamless integration of products from both retailers. Management envisions a one-stop shop where customers can find everything from home organization items to bedding and kitchen essentials.

Marcus Lemonis, the executive chairman and CEO of Bed Bath & Beyond, said in a recent statement that customers no longer think of their homes in rigid categories. In the past, people had to deal with multiple retailers for various home needs, but this new model aims to address that issue effectively.

Lemonis further stated, “We believe the future lies in businesses that completely solve customer problems. By combining Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store, we’re creating a space where customers can find products, organize their areas, design solutions, and access services all in one place.”

While the California expansion marks a significant step, it’s worth noting that executives from BB&B have previously indicated they would not reopen traditional standalone stores in the state due to high operational costs. The company is actively consolidating a vast home goods empire that includes Overstock and buybuy BABY among others.

The initial 22 stores represent just the start, with more locations anticipated to be converted in the upcoming weeks as the company builds an ecosystem they refer to as “everything home.”
