Mixed Reactions to Juneteenth Observance in Sports
Most sports leagues universally celebrated Juneteenth, but a few exceptions stood out. Notably, the Detroit Lions chose not to acknowledge the day, leaving fans puzzled.
Some speculated it might have been an oversight. After all, with Juneteenth being formally recognized as a holiday only recently in 2021, many casual sports fans might overlook it. Yet, one would expect professional sports teams to mark such significant moments in racial and cultural discourse regularly.
Fans were particularly perplexed by the Lions’ choice as it seemed inconsistent with the league’s broader trend of honoring various cultural events. One supporter even remarked that it “must have been an accident.”
“If you check the Lions’ profile picture,” a fan pointed out, “it features the rainbow colors, but nothing for Juneteenth.”
Meanwhile, the National Hockey League did not mention the holiday either, and some fans voiced their concerns over its lack of recognition, especially given the league’s ongoing diversity initiatives that gained momentum during the Black Lives Matter movement.
Criticism has surfaced in the past about the NHL not doing enough regarding diversity. Recently appointed executive vice president Kim Davis expressed the intent to make the league more inclusive, likening hockey to a “tribe” that ought to be “more welcoming.”
Despite its efforts, the league faced backlash over its handling of Pride jerseys and themes. On social media, NFL fans debated the Lions’ position, many baffled while others questioned the team’s disproportionate support for some causes over others.
One user commented, “I think it’s bizarre that they can support LGBTQ rights but overlook Black representation, particularly when so many players on their roster are Black.”
This issue isn’t unique to the Lions, as the Texas Rangers are similarly isolated for avoiding LGBTQ pride events. Both teams now stand out within their leagues for their absence of recognition for Juneteenth and related celebrations.
Requests for comments from the Lions and the NHL Players’ Association have gone unanswered.
