Trevor Bauer’s Return to Mexico

Trevor Bauer is heading back to Mexico, which serves as a clear indication that despite his impressive performance, Major League Baseball is still not ready to bring him back.

After winning the Atlantic League championship with the Long Island Ducks, where he broke the franchise’s strikeout record and threw a seven-inning no-hitter, the 35-year-old pitcher has re-signed with the Diablos Rojos in Mexico.

If Bauer re-joins a team that posted a lackluster 10-0 record in 2024, it won’t be due to a shortage of talent on the mound. Instead, it appears there are no major league teams willing to take a chance on him.

During his time with the Ducks, Bauer made seven starts, achieving an impressive 5-1 record alongside a 2.36 ERA and striking out 66 batters against just seven walks in 42 innings.

The former National League Cy Young Award winner has not pitched in Mexico before due to a drop in talent over the years.

Bauer’s professional exile follows a league suspension that significantly altered his career path. Initially, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred suspended him for a staggering 324 games, though an independent arbitrator later reduced that to 192 games.

Consequently, he lost about $37.5 million from his $102 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team ultimately decided to release him rather than keep him on the roster, choosing to pay out the rest of his contract instead.

The uproar began with accusations from Lindsey Hill. Initially covered widely by the media, the public narrative shifted when shocking evidence emerged.

Although Bauer was never charged with a crime, text messages later revealed that Hill had discussed plans to target wealthy athletes for financial gain.

The ensuing legal battle between the two resulted in a settlement of zero dollars, with neither party compensating the other.

Despite resolving the legal issues, Bauer’s route back to the major leagues continues to be blocked. Major League teams still allocate crucial innings to struggling starters, all while asserting to fans that they are doing everything possible to secure victories.

The disparity has become impossible to ignore. Bauer has been actively trying to re-enter discussions within baseball. He found success in Japan, had notable performances in Mexico, rebuilt his public image on social platforms, and recently showcased strong skills while playing on Long Island.

So, Bauer has returned to Mexico City, focusing on his journey that seems destined to exclude the major leagues.
