Wyndham Clark appreciates US Open fans who harshly taunted him during his journey to victory

Windham Clark’s Unique Experience at the U.S. Open

Windham Clark had a different take on the Long Island crowd at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club during the final round of the U.S. Open compared to other golf officials.

After securing his second U.S. Open title, Clark expressed gratitude to the “passionate, loyal, and demanding” fans who cheered him on throughout the tournament. He mentioned, “Thank you to all the fans for making this championship what it is,” in a post on social media. He added, “The New York crowd is passionate, honest, and demanding. Regardless of whether you rooted for me, you created an unforgettable atmosphere and motivated us all to perform at our peak.”

Contrasting with Golf Channel analyst Eamon Lynch, who described fans as a “stain on the world of golf,” and Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir, who labeled their behavior as “toxic,” Clark’s experience with the New York crowd was notably different. During the final round, he encountered a mix of jeers and cheers—a rather unusual occurrence in golf.

Clark’s perspective was likely influenced by a strong performance, as he finished the first two days at 7 under par, eventually claiming victory by one stroke over Sam Burns. Reflecting on Shinnecock Hills, he said, “The U.S. Open should have it all, and I am extremely honored to have my name forever associated with it.”

His past, including a controversial incident at Oakmont Country Club, has made him a polarizing figure among golf enthusiasts. Nonetheless, Clark’s attitude seemed unshaken. He candidly shared, “Let’s be honest, last year didn’t have many highs. There were more questions than answers, more frustration than celebration, and many moments that tested my faith in myself. This game can be incredibly humbling. You don’t owe anything. Sometimes all you can do is keep showing up and believe that the work will pay off in the end.”

He underscored the significance of his recent win. “This trophy means so much more because of the journey I took to get here. All the setbacks, doubts, and difficult days make this moment so sweet. I’ll never forget this week, this place, and the feeling of standing here as a two-time U.S. Open champion,” he concluded.
