Rory McIlroy’s Encounter with a Heckler at the US Open
Rory McIlroy faced the heckling fan at the US Open with unexpected humor.
As he began play alongside Maverick McNeely at Long Island’s Sinek Hills Golf Club on Saturday, a spectator’s enthusiastic shout echoed, urging, “Bunker! Get in the bunker!” Though the fan was clearly enjoying their moment, McIlroy opted for silence, allowing the cheers and jeers to wash over him.
Striding toward the fairway, he turned to gesture dismissively at the crowd, clearly unamused by the overt taunts.
Golf, as a sport, typically embraces respect; in fact, tournaments like the Masters even prohibit mobile phones. Some speculated that it might help prevent incidents like this at future events.
Another fan posted on Reddit, claiming this heckler had been vocal all weekend. Interestingly, someone else in the crowd shouted, “Get in the water,” prompting eventual winner Windham Clark to suggest the fan’s antics were all about seeking some fleeting fame.
Despite the distractions, McIlroy wrapped up the tournament tied for 32nd at three over par. Windham Clark, on the other hand, played consistently to secure the victory at four under.
As the third round played out, Sky Sports’ Mike captured McIlroy’s frustration on the third hole, where he exclaimed, “Go home, Rory, you son of a bitch,” reflecting the pressure of the competition.
After his win, Clark expressed disappointment about the event finishing late, which resulted in fewer spectators during key moments. He described the atmosphere as “a little flat,” hoping for a more engaged crowd on the following day and recognizing the significance of fan presence in those pivotal moments.
