Judge Prevents Subpoena of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

Federal Judge Blocks DOJ Subpoena to Minnesota Governor

A federal judge has halted a subpoena from the Department of Justice (DOJ) directed at Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other state Democrats. This subpoena aimed to examine possible connections between corruption and local politics in Somalia.

U.S. District Judge Patrick Schultz made this ruling on June 17, which was publicly issued on Monday. He conveyed that “initiating a criminal investigation to harass a political opponent” represents an “unlawful and unethical use” of the grand jury process.

Schultz stated, “Creating a criminal inquiry to intimidate a political rival, or to prompt certain actions—especially when the federal government can’t directly ask the political opponent for it—is clearly illegal and unethical.”

Moreover, he emphasized that President Donald Trump’s criticisms of Walz and other Democrats, along with his threats of “retaliation,” provided strong evidence that the Justice Department’s grand jury subpoenas were part of an overarching effort to pressure state and local officials.

The chief judge, appointed by George W. Bush, remarked that Trump’s continuous attacks and threats against Democrat Walz and other Minnesota officials confirmed that the grand jury subpoena, issued during ICE’s Operation Metro Surge, was part of a wider scheme to coerce Minnesota leaders into helping the Trump administration enforce immigration laws.

Schultz also pointed out that the U.S. Constitution limits the federal government’s ability to “compel states to enforce federal law,” noting that the subpoenas are part of a longstanding pattern by the Trump administration of using criminal investigations against its opponents.

This judicial decision came after the DOJ had issued subpoenas in January to Governor Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaori Ha, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty.

Earlier in January, Breitbart News reported that HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill claimed that “Somalia-led taxpayer fraud is a core part of the Minnesota Democratic Party’s apparatus.”
