Sen. Ted Cruz Criticizes Democratic Party’s Direction

SUMMER, S.C. — Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has expressed concerns that the Democratic Party is becoming “radicalized,” mentioning candidates like Zoran Mamdani, Graham Platner, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) as indicators of this shift.

“Unfortunately, I think that’s the base of the Democratic Party,” Cruz shared during a conversation with Fox News Digital. He stated that the party’s identity is now reflected in figures like Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, even referring to Platner as “the communist Nazi oyster farmer,” a comment that might raise eyebrows.

“That’s where the Democratic energy is. That’s where the funding is. They seem to be moving further to the left,” he added.

Cruz made these remarks while campaigning alongside South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson for the upcoming Republican gubernatorial runoff against Lt. Governor Pamela Evette. He accused the Democratic Party of drifting away from centrism, asserting that the party’s actions are largely driven by their opposition to former President Donald Trump.

Interestingly, some strategists have linked recent developments, like a Democratic Socialist’s success in a New York City primary, as a sign of “generational change” within the party.

Cruz pointed out that much of the Democratic opposition seems to stem from a dislike for Trump. “It’s really tragic that they’re motivated by hatred of him, especially considering what he achieved as president,” he said.

Moreover, Cruz argued that Democrats are disconnected from the needs and priorities of everyday Americans who are looking for “common sense” solutions.

“I don’t think most Americans are aligned with this radical turn,” he commented, mentioning that the people of South Carolina are looking for something different. “They want practicality. Today, that’s missing from the Democratic Party.”

He specifically highlighted the controversial actions of candidates like Platner, Mamdani, and Ocasio-Cortez as examples of this transformative period. Platner recently secured the nomination for the Maine Senate, despite being mired in scandals, including troubling online comments and allegations related to personal conduct.

Even with the controversies, prominent Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) are backing Platner, who is set to run against five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins this November.

In contrast, Mamdani gained attention after defeating Andrew Cuomo in last year’s New York mayoral race. As a self-identified democratic socialist, he has campaigned for various progressive initiatives like free public transport and higher taxes on the wealthy, while also openly critiquing Israel and supporting Palestinian issues.

Currently, Mamdani is leveraging his popularity to endorse a new wave of socialists and progressives in the New York state primary, exploring how far left the party can potentially move.

Ocasio-Cortez, who notably upset Congressman Joe Crowley in the 2018 New York primary, continues to be a prominent figure within the party, representing its more progressive wing.

The backdrop of Cruz’s comments comes as South Carolina Republicans are gearing up for a critical runoff election to establish the Republican nominee for the position left vacant by term-limited Governor Henry McMaster.
