Knicks Owner and NYC Mayor Exchange Tensions at Victory Parade

Last week, the owner of the New York Knicks, James Dolan, and Mayor Zoran Mamdani found themselves in a public disagreement regarding viewing parties for the team. Fast forward to their recent meeting at City Hall, which was meant to celebrate the team’s victory parade, and the air was thick with tension on stage.

During their earlier spat, Dolan had remarked in an interview that Mamdani wasn’t a genuine Knicks fan. Perhaps that struck a chord with the mayor, as he took to the podium at City Hall just a few feet from Dolan. In his speech, he reminisced about his cherished memories of the Knicks, throwing in a mix of both legendary and lesser-known players from the franchise’s history—including Charles Oakley, who was famously removed from Madison Square Garden after a notorious altercation in 2017.

Mamdani spoke for nearly eight minutes, detailing the team’s challenging journey to clinch a championship. He touched on the heartaches they’ve endured, all leading up to this moment—New York’s first title in 53 years. In contrast, Dolan’s remarks were brief and somewhat defensive. “We don’t need your vote. If you’re a true Knicks fan, you already know what happened,” he declared.

Following that, Mamdani presented keys to the city to various players and staff, including Dolan and his son. When the ceremony concluded, the Dolans exchanged handshakes with the mayor, which felt a little awkward given the recent friction.

Earlier developments in their relationship revealed an ongoing tension; Mamdani had previously used the Knicks logo for his campaign, resulting in a cease and desist order from the team. Additionally, there was a minor uproar when the White House posted something involving the Knicks logo shortly after last year’s election, which was also swiftly retracted after the team’s intervention.

“The Knicks remain neutral on political matters,” the team had stated at the time. “We hope all elected officials can effectively serve in office.”

Before the City Hall celebration, Mamdani, donning a Knicks jersey, had enjoyed the parade on a float alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby. It’s definitely been quite the week for both the team and its supporters, to say the least.
